![]() 19, 1936, the top five in the inaugural AP rankings were Minnesota, Duke, Army, Northwestern and Purdue and yech. ![]() ![]() Well, not the part about 1936 and nobody worrying about the NCAA. ![]() It’s a little known historical fact - as opposed to most of what you read in this space, which is completely fabricated - that the very first college football rankings came out around this week in 1936, and this opened the door to Spam being invented in 1937, both being comprised of mysterious byproducts, and there were only two SEC teams in the rankings, LSU and Tulane, because this was a long time ago when history professors made more money than defensive coordinators, and libraries were bigger than training rooms, and Bear Bryant was just a low-level assistant coach at Alabama and therefore not yet empowered to bring in football players through the backdoor on swimming scholarships, because nobody really worried about the NCAA, hypothetically speaking, because this is all hypothetical. ![]()
